Badger Meter (Milwaukee, WI) is a manufacturer of water meters and AMI systems in service of the municipal and industrial water industries. Here at SCADAmetrics (Wildwood, MO), we manufacture flow metering instrumentation in support of Badger and others, with the stated mission of helping users extend such meters for enhanced SCADA and AMI interoperability and functionality.

Badger E Series G2 Ultrasonic Flow Meter

Like many manufacturers of municipal-type flow meters, Badger’s signaling options include 3-wire encoded protocols (UI-1203/Sensus Protocol, Neptune Protocol) for integration with AMI/AMR systems. SCADAmetrics leverages the encoded outputs on Badger’s flow meters to extend their meters’ connectivity into the realms of SCADA, Telemetry, and Building Automation.

One example of added value is through the SCADAmetrics model TMD TheMeterDisplay™: When a meter is not easily accessible (pit, vault, crawl space, rafters), and a direct read is desired, the TMD provides remote display functionality.

Model TMD TheMeterDisplay™

The TMD display provides the user with full-featured display features, such as totalization, rate-of-flow, and meter ID.

In addition to the standard AMI signal (Meter Total, Rate, and Meter ID), the Badger E-Series G2 meters offer up a wealth of extended information to the connected meter reading system. Extra data, such as pressure and temperature, are available via the encoded protocol. The TMD firmware has been enhanced to support the advanced Badger data and alarm fields:

The TMD User Manual has been updated, providing instructions to the user regarding taking advantage of these important new features.

Pass-Thru AMI Connectivity

An important feature of the TMD display is its pass-thru port to AMI. In other words, the installation of a TMD display does not preclude the installation of an AMI radio. Furthermore, the pass-thru to AMI is functional — even if the TMD’s battery is depleted or removed.
